Three members of TVXQ, YoungWoong Jaejoong, Micky Yoochun and Xiah Junsu, are in a dispute with their agency SM Entertainment over their exclusive contract. One TVXQ fan site, through donations from fans, released an advertisement on the front page of a daily newspaper highlighting the unlawfulness of the contract and gave the three members strength. They also had online and offline petitions and collected over 200,000 signatures that they submitted to the Fair Trade Committee, Seoul District Courts and the Korean Human Right Commission.
Idol fandoms are growing, not only in quantity, but in quality as well. They seem to be stronger and tighter than ever and are using their power to shape the K-pop industry.
The current happenings that have been occurring with popular idol groups has brought the large fandoms' power into a brighter light. Before, they were just known as 'Oppa Forces', so what has changed to make these fandoms forces to be reckoned with?
The biggest reason is the fact that as the history of idols lengthens, fandoms create know-hows for situations.
The large fandoms began with H.O.T.'s debut in 1996 and have embarked on their 14th year. Idol fandoms have survived through the ups and downs of idol groups' histories. This is why these fandoms have created a 'manual' to deal with situations that has been handed down from generation to generation of fans.
Through a long period of time, countless idol groups have debuted, performed, disbanded, had members with solo activities, had new members added and had members leave and fans have evolved with these situations. This is why fans these days are able to deal with rude comments or rumors about their favorite celebrity in a quick and efficient way.
Another reason would be because the age range in the fandoms are increasing which has resulted in the formation of tightly knit, efficient groups who has social and economical power.
In the idol fandom that used to be for teenage girls only, the image of idol groups has changed from pretty, 'flower boys' to idol groups who have an manly aura coming from them that has brought in a large group of 'noona (older sister)' fans. This is why idol groups are open to a bigger variety of activities as they have noona fans who have economic and social power.
The last reason would have to be the better communication that has resulted from technological advances of the Internet.
Along with the Internet's growth, fan sites and fan cafes, other than the official fan clubs, can participate in community service projects as fans can better communicate with each other. As the internet is a place of unlimited information and connection, the information transfer amongst fans increases the loyalty fans have towards their idols and strengthen the bonds between individual fans.
This is why fandoms work with fan sites that fans run as their center of operation, not the official fan clubs that the agencies recognize.
